One of the most fun, jam-packed weeks of the year in Port Townsend is just about here. The 2012 Port Townsend Rhododendron Festival takes place May 14-19 and is a can’t miss week on the Olympic Peninsula.
The Festival is celebrated in Port Townsend, WA every year during the third week of May, when beautiful “Rhodies” bloom all over Jefferson County.
The “Rhody Fest” is a community tradition dating from 1935 honoring the Washington State Flower by providing a community festival that includes giving scholarships to high school students selected as royalty.
The week of events includes the Rhody Tour for cyclists, the Rhody Run for runners and a Grand Parade with floats and royalty. In addition, the town hosts Trike Races, Rhododendron Flower Show, Pet Parade, Kiddies Parade, Bed Races, Kiwanis Fish Fry, Jim Caldwell Memorial Rhody Open, an Elks Rhody Fundraiser Pancake Breakfast, and a classic carnival.
Most of the events of the Rhododendron Festival (Port Townsend) are free, but events including the pancake breakfast, fish fry, and golf tournament do have separate prices, with profits going to local charities.
